Samsøe & Samsøe selects Nedap’s cloud-based RFID platform for European roll-out

The Netherlands, Groenlo, August 29, 2019

Full inventory visibility enables improved product availability in both stores and supply chain

Nedap, the global leader in RFID-based retail solutions, announced today Samsøe & Samsøe, one of Denmark’s fastest growing fashion retailers, has selected Nedap leading RFID platform !D Cloud, as a foundation for their RFID implementation. Known as an international brand rooted in Scandinavian simplicity, Samsøe & Samsøe is positioning itself to take RFID beyond the brick and mortar store walls in order to develop a future-proof omnichannel strategy.

Nedap’s !D Cloud enables Samsøe & Samsøe to achieve real-time view on stock levels and their precise location within the store, closing the gap between e-commerce and physical shopping. The application of RFID raises stock accuracy to a minimum level of 98% resulting in improved product availability and increased sales.

“One of our strongest brand values is simplicity,” said Tommy Nimand, CFO at Samsøe & Samsøe. “This is reflected in the design of the collections and is also a major aspect in our shopping experience. Our goal is to achieve full stock visibility through RFID, whether it is in our warehouse or in stores. Solving the out-of-stock challenge unlocks full omnichannel potential and creates the ultimate customer experience across all boundaries in retail. We want our customers to be able to shop everywhere and return anywhere, whether an item is purchased in Copenhagen or in London.”

Virtual Shielding™
The newest feature within Nedap’s !D Cloud platform, Virtual Shielding™ (patent pending), benefits Samsøe & Samsøe by allowing store staff to easily read RFID tags by using RFID handheld devices and automatically determine the exact location within a store of RFID tags in an accurate way. This smart allocation technology solves the problem of reading RFID tags through walls and eliminates the need for physical shielding by equipping stock rooms with aluminum foil or RFID blocking paints. This feature saves retailers both time and money.

Guaranteed stock availability in clean flagship store interior
Samsøe & Samsøe’s newly opened flagship store in Copenhagen is designed according to a minimalistic store concept. “In order to ensure the store’s clean look, the number of displayed items is limited to two pieces per style. Nedap’s Virtual Shielding functionality determines which items are located on the store floor and which items are kept in the stock room. This ensures a clean store ambiance, the best customer experience, and ensures we don’t lose a sale due to stock inaccuracy,” said Nimand.

“We are delighted to work with Samsøe & Samsøe because they are committed to an innovative omnichannel strategy that serves their customers,” said Elles te Boome-Harbers, Global Sales Business Developer at Nedap Retail. “Using cloud based RFID as their ‘common language’, enables us to align involved suppliers of such as labels, ERP and POS systems. This ensures the ability to track individual items throughout the entire supply chain” explains Elles te Boome-Harbers. “We are looking forward to further aligning their internal processes to meet customers’ future needs and demands, safeguarding true omnichannel retailing.”

RFID-based Electronic Article Surveillance
In addition to RFID for stock management, Samsøe & Samsøe store entrances are equipped with Nedap iD Top RFID-based overhead EAS systems. This safeguards a high levels of security while maintaining open store entrances. All Samsøe & Samsøe items are RFID tagged at the source of production. This means that no additional loss prevention is needed, as stock is already 100% security tagged. This eliminates additional in-store tagging costs.

Nedap applies for global patent for new Virtual Shielding™ technology

The Netherlands, Groenlo, 30 April 2019

Smart, proven technology in !D Cloud, Nedap’s leading RFID platform, eliminates a multi-million cost component from retail RFID deployments

Nedap announces that the patent application is pending in over 120 countries for !D Cloud’s latest functionality: Virtual Shielding™. This smart allocation technology in the Nedap !D Cloud software platform, allows store staff to easily read RFID tags by using RFID handheld devices and automatically determine the actual (sub) location within a store of RFID tags in an accurate way. This solves the problem of reading RFID tags through walls. The industry has long denied the feasibility of reliably determining individual tag locations without physical shielding however, Nedap has cracked the code on this.

Rob Schuurman, Managing Director Nedap Retail, comments: “Our main competitive edge is that we are more than willing to invest in Research & Development. We are convinced by doing so we add more value to our solutions and help our customers to become more successful in their business. Last year alone we spent over 25 million Euros at Nedap in R&D, resulting in many new technological breakthroughs. One of them is Virtual Shielding. In our view, this is another breakthrough to make it easier and more cost-effective for retailers to deploy RFID. We are proud to say that our first customers have already successfully implemented this technology, saving significant amounts of money.”

Proven technology, redefined

RFID is a proven technology to raise the stock accuracy and quickly get insights on the available stock-items in a retail store. However, RFID also has its challenges when it comes to determining the correct (sub-)location of a stock items in the store. That means that retailers need to apply physical shielding like aluminum foil or metallic paint to prevent ‘leakage’ and to ensure reliable insights regarding what stock is available on the sales floor and which stock-items are available in the stockroom.

Virtual Shielding eliminates the need for physical shielding and allows for faster RFID roll-outs across the globe. The patent-pending Virtual Shielding technology developed by Nedap lowers the RFID deployment and investment costs. This significantly increases the ROI of RFID-projects and making RFID financially feasible for more retailers.

Virtual Shielding has been officially launched during the NRF trade show in the US, which was held on January 13-15 this year.

Nedap integrates Zebra technology in !D Cloud RFID retail platform

The Netherlands, Groenlo, 25 April 2019

Free choice of RFID devices allows retailers to use best of breed solutions for stock counting

Nedap announces that it has now completed the integration of all cornerstone Zebra RFID technology for retail in-store stock management within !D Cloud, Nedap’s leading RFID platform. The integrations spans the RFD2000 and RFD8500 series handheld RFID sleds, the TC5x and TC2x series Touch Mobile Computers and the ZD500r and ZT400 series RFID printers.

Remarkable is deep level of support that !D Cloud offers for the RFD sled devices, where even the firmware updates are managed through the !D Cloud solution. For the printers !D Cloud uniquely offers in-app printing of individual RFID labels or complete shipment that come into a store without RFID labels for the manufacturer. Here the label template and Zebra Programming Language (ZPL) print commands are managed directly from the !D Cloud App via in-store Wi-Fi to the printers, thus eliminating the requirement and costs of label print software.

Jeroen Struycken, Global Director of Business Development at Nedap Retail comments: We see an increased demand for RFID solutions in retail and as the leading RFID provider we want to offer our customers the choice of the best products out there. By nature !D Cloud is hardware agnostic and support a multitude of RFID devices, but having the width of the Zebra equipment as a standard in our toolbox is a big plus.“

The recent Zebra TC20 PDA and RFD2000 handheld UHF RFID sled, combined with Nedap’s !D Cloud solutionwill presented at the Nedap booth #5B60 at RetailEXPO 2019, which will be held at the Olympia in London on May 1-2.

America Today selects Nedap’s RFID solution

First RFID rollout on the Dutch retail market

Groenlo, The Netherlands, 19 January 2019

Fashion retailer America Today, part of Coolinvestments, has decided to implement Nedap’s !D Cloud RFID software at its 69 stores in the Benelux countries to structurally raise stock accuracy and, as a result, guarantee product availability. The rollout is planned for the second half of 2019.

Looking for the business case
In the autumn of 2018, America Today started a pilot together with Nedap in 3 stores, to investigate whether there was actually sufficient basis for a business case. During the course of the pilot, a weekly stock count was performed using the !D Cloud software and a RFID handheld reader, which resulted in an improvement in stock accuracy from 75% on average to 98%.

Jonathan Kahn, CFO of America Today, explains: “We realised that our stock accuracy was going to be a huge bottleneck for our omnichannel ambitions. That is why we started investigating, together with Nedap, whether we had a business case, and it turned out that we actually had one. We opted to follow the GS1 standards, so as to offer the cooperation with all our Supply Chain partners more opportunities in the future. We are fully convinced that RFID will be a great help to us in gaining more insight into and control of our stock.”

Arjan Pruiksma, Business Developer at Nedap Retail, adds: “We are very pleased that America Today has become the first clothing retailer in the Netherlands to implement RFID with Nedap. Similarly to other retailers, America Today does not have reliable stock data, which prevents it from truly integrating its stores and online channels. We are really looking forward to starting this RFID journey together.”

Stock accuracy with RFID
Nedap’s !D Cloud software suite is a SaaS (Software as a Service) solution which was especially developed for the retail sector. The software provides insight into stock levels and the exact location of each item. This also provides the basis for omnichannel concepts such as Click & Collect and Ship-from-Store. Kahn: “Our biggest driver is omnichannel, but a technology like RFID really tempts you to do everything at once. We opted to place our initial focus on maximising results with the lowest possible level of complexity. The first results are very promising, and the stores are enthusiastic as well. We cannot wait to get started.”

Nedap’s !D Cloud software selected for first large-scale RFID deployment in the African retail market

Groenlo, The Netherlands, 11 January 2019

South African value retailer Ackermans has signed a three-year contract with Nedap for the supply of !D Cloud, Nedap’s leading RFID software platform, to its 800 stores in Southern Africa. Ackermans is the first retailer in Africa to roll out RFID on such a large scale. The primary objective of this endeavor is to increase in-store stock accuracy in order to optimize replenishment processes from warehouse to stores.

Marius Jordaan, Operations Systems Manager at Ackermans explains: “We know that the on-shelf availability of our apparel items is crucial in our large-format stores. If a certain size is missing, we will lose that sale. We understand that RFID is the ideal solution to raise stock accuracy and to guarantee that the full size range is always available on the sales floor.”

Proving the business case
The decision to roll out Nedap’s !D Cloud software was preceded by a proof-of-concept at ten stores to confirm the RFID business case. During the proof-of-concept, weekly RFID cycle counts resulted in approximately 98% stock accuracy. This led to improved product availability and, ultimately, increased sales.

Helmuth Luttig, Commercial Director comments: “We knew that selecting the correct platform partner would be critical to the success of our project, therefore after extensive market research, we selected Nedap as our long-term service provider. Key reasons for selecting Nedap is their ability to scale, their cost-effective software, their extensive roll-out experience, and their community-based feature development program.”

Mark Kasbergen, International Business Development Manager at Nedap Retail, concludes: “What makes this RFID deployment unique is that, together with our local partner StegTech, we have successfully managed to build a business case for value retail. This project clearly shows the profound benefits associated with increased in-store stock accuracy. We are proud of our achievement as well as the learnings gained by signing up the first Southern African retailer for a large-scale, source-tagged RFID rollout in the region”.

Misako to use Nedap’s !D Cloud RFID software in 200+ stores

Groenlo, The Netherlands, 6 November 2017

Spanish fashion retailer Misako will use Nedap’s !D Cloud Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) software solution in its 200+ stores and in its distribution centre. By using !D Cloud, Misako is able to raise its stock accuracy to over 98%. Having full transparency of  its store stock levels is an essential part of the retailer’s international growth strategy.

Excellent match
Jean François Thuilliez, Deputy CEO at Misako: “Accurate stock data will strongly contribute to our current stores’ performance and enable our international expansion. We are a very lean organization and Nedap’s !D Cloud solution is an excellent match with our way of working. It is easy-to-use, light on our IT resources and highly scalable.”

By raising the stock accuracy on item-level to over 98%, Misako is able to increase the on-shelf availability, improve the DC-to-store replenishment and also improve the speed of their online and Click & Collect orders. Thuilliez: “In today’s omnichannel world, we need to know exactly where our merchandise is. Only then, we are able to speed up our processes and truly integrate our physical stores with our web shops. True integration means that we have one single pool of products and we know the exact location of each individual item.”

RFID in the cloud
All items are source tagged at the retailer’s production facilities. In the stores, staff members perform a weekly count using an RFID handheld reader and the !D Cloud app on a mobile device to determine which items are available. !D Cloud then highlights the discrepancies between Misako’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and the RFID count. Consequently, the causes of stock differences – through losses or administrative errors – can quickly be identified and dealt with.
